1963 Rosan : President John F. Kennedy Photo Cards
President John F. Kennedy Photo Cards were released in 1963 by the
Rosan Printing Corp. of Brooklyn, New York. The 64-card black-and-white
series showcases the life of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 35th President of
the United States. Wax packs retailed for five cents each.
A Pictorial Biography of John F. Kennedy and his family trading card series was issued in 1964 by Ed-U-Cards. The 42-card unnumbered collection includes identical images with different text descriptions.
The first American in space, Mercury-Redstone 3 astronaut Alan B. Shepard Jr., is featured on card #35, "Decorating Spaceman." The photograph was taken in the White House Rose Garden on May 8, 1961. President Kennedy is pictured presenting Commander Shepard with the NASA Distinguished Service Medal.
On February 20, 1962, John Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth.
Friendship 7 was launched from Cape Canaveral atop of an Atlas LV-3B l
rocket. Glenn completed three orbits before safely splashing down in the
Atlantic Ocean near Grand Turk Island. The entire flight lasted 4 hours, 55
minutes, and 23 seconds. Both Glenn and the Mercury spacecraft were
promptly recovered by the USS Noa (DD-841).
Friendship 7 is held by the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. The spacecraft in displayed in the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles International Airport in Virginia.
