1951 British Educational Series : Modern Aircraft



The British Educational Series Modern Aircraft cards were distributed by various companies in England. The collection was later retitled Wonders of Modern Transport. Brands observed include BeanO Ltd., Sweetule Junior Service, and Osborne Tobacco Co. The 50-card series features photographs of post-World War II aircraft and weapons developed by Britain and the United States. Each card measures approximately 1.45 x 2.68 inches (37 x 68 mm).

"The U.S. Navy's Martin Viking"

The collection includes Viking #7, a U.S. Navy sounding rocket. The Martin RTV-N-12 rocket was launched into sub-orbital space from White Sands LC33 on August 7, 1951. Viking #7 reached an apogee of 136 miles (219 km) , breaking the single-stage altitude record set by an American V-2. The payload contained an experiment package to measure cosmic radiation.
