1962 Jell-O & Hostess : Famous Aircraft of the World
Avion Célèbres Du Monde Entier
Famous Aircraft of the World coins were released in 1962. The 200-piece
collection was distributed in Canada with packets of Jell-O brand desserts and
Hostess potato chips. The series showcases the history of aviation from the
myth of Daedalus to the dawn of the space age. Each plastic coin measures
approximately 1.38 inches (35 mm) in diameter. The "airplane coins" are also referred
to as "airplane chips" or "airplane wheels."
Famous Aircraft of the World coins were illustrated by Don Watt. The 60-page fact book was compiled and written by James A. Hornick. The booklet was published in English and French variants by General Foods, Limited of Toronto and Ontario. A premium collector caddy stand was available that holds all 200 coins. The fact book and stand were available by mail order for 50 cents.
Famous Aircraft of the World coins are divided into eight series. The
illustrated stickers on the face each coin contain each subset printed in
English and French. Each series was distributed in a different color: black,
blue, green, grey, orange, red, white, and yellow. The back of each coin
depicts an airplane propeller along with the Jell-O and Hostess logos.
The collection includes illustrations of early spacecraft: Sputnik
1, Vostok 1 (Yuri Gagarin), the Mercury-Atlas 6 capsule
Friendship 7 (John Glenn), and the X-15 hypersonic research vehicle.
