1971 Trebor Chews : Famous Pets #19 - Enos the Astrochimp

"Enos the Astrochimp" and the Mercury No. 9 spacecraft are depicted on card #19. Named after the Hebrew word for "man," Enos is the first and only chimpanzee to orbit the Earth, and third hominid to orbit after Yuri Gagarin and Gherman Titov. Enos launched aboard Mercury-Atlas 5 on November 29, 1961.

The chimpanzee completed two orbits before safely splashing down about 200 miles south of Bermuda. Enos removed the medical sensors and catheter before being recovered by the USS Stormes over three hours later. The mission qualified the Mercury spacecraft for the historic orbital flight of John Glenn aboard Friendship 7.

Enos died of dysentery of November 4, 1962. The Mercury-Atlas 5 spacecraft is held by the Smithsonian Institution and displayed at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham, North Carolina.

1971 Trebor Chews : Famous Pets #19 - Enos the Astrochimp

"Dogs, mice, hamsters, even insects and microbes, have been put into Earth orbit. The U.S. Mercury space programme flew intrepid astrochimps into space, among them a cheerful chimpanzee called Enos. He was placed in a special cradle (shown on the cover of the album) and fitted with instruments to check his reactions. He fed himself from food dispensers during the flight. On re-entry and splashdown, the air-conditioning in the Mercury capsule broke down. The temperature rose to a dangerous 110 degrees. But when the capsule was hauled aboard the recovery ship and Enos released, he ran at once to his trainer and solemnly shook hands!"
